A lot of philosophical issues can seem really abstract and remote when philosophers describe them, so that can lead people to think that these questions have no bearing on their lives in any way, shape, or form. But the reason philosophical questions are interesting is that they can actually have relevance to our decision-making; the choices that we make in our daily lives can be reflective of certain philosophical or moral positions. So I think dramatizing these philosophical questions is a way of making their relevance clearer to people. These issues are not purely abstract or intellectual, and science fiction stories offer a way to make you genuinely invested in the outcome of a thought experiment.

영화 <컨택트>를 보고 나서, 그날로 바로 원작인 테드 창의 <당신 인생의 이야기>를 읽었다. 어디선가 영화를 먼저 보고 책을 읽는 쪽이 이해하기 편하다는 글을 읽은 기억이 난다. 정말 멋진 영화였고, 대단한 소설이었다.

다양한 지식을 기반으로 이를 독특한 관점으로 풀어낸 그의 소설들은 굉장히 지적이면서도 신선한 재미가 있었다. 조금 어려운 부분이 있었음에도 흥미로울 수 있었던 것은 과학적인 소재를 통해 그의 소설들이 말하고자 하는 철학적인 사유와 통찰들이 와닿았기 때문이었던 것 같다.

단편들 하나하나 모두 기발하고 흥미로웠는데, 간만에 지적 포만감(?)을 만끽할 수 있었던 책 :)
